Alternator Selection

Identifying the correct alternator ensures optimal charging system performance. The alternator you choose should be as physically similar to your existing alternator as possible.  Most applications use one of four mounting styles: 1" single foot, 2" single foot, 3.15" I.D. dual foot, and 4" I.D. dual foot mounts. Some marine gasoline engines with serpentine belts and idler arm tensioning control (Volvo-Penta, Mercruiser) may use our 622-Series pad mount alternator.

Balmar's Model 621 serves both 1" and 2" single foot applications. Once you've identified the best mount to match your system, you'll need to determine the maximum amperage your system will support. Limits for amperages based on belt widths are as follows: belts narrower than 1/2" are limited to 80 amps maximum. Single 1/2" belts may support a maximum of 110 amps.

Alternators in excess of 110 amps of output will require dual vee belts or multi-groove belts. Failure to adhere to this guideline may result in premature belt failure.  See previous page for additional details. On 24-volt systems, any alternator in excess of 75-amp output needs dual vee or multigroove belts.  Many applications require a ground that’s independent of the engine block and alternator case. If your system features a ground terminal that's isolated from the alternator case, be sure that your new alternator also features an isolated ground terminal.  These alternator models are designated by an "IG". Isolated ground alternators can be used in any application as long as a dedicated ground cable (equal in gauge to the positive cable) is installed between the alternator and system ground.

  • *Mounting configuration may vary by model and year. Follow directions for determining proper replacement alternator by visual inspection.
  • ** Some Crusader models may require alternator with an offset tensioning arm.
  • *** Dual belt models will require special Lehman pulley with 3/8” spacing between belts.
  • **** May require Lugger mounting Kit.
  • ***** Use original alternator pulley.
  • ******Use 9mm x 4" pulley if belt is driven directly off of flywheel
